Third earthquake to hit Melbourne in a week with a 2.3-magnitude earthquake recorded on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria

A magnitude 2.3 earthquake struck Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula – the third to hit Greater Melbourne in a week.

The quake struck at a depth of eight kilometers on Saturday at 12:03pm with 120 quake reports sent to GeoScience Australia.

It comes after a 3.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the Melbourne sub-district of Sunbury, 40 kilometers northwest of the CBD, on Sunday.

It struck just before midnight at a depth of two kilometres, according to GeoScience Australia.

The terrifying quake was reportedly felt as far away as Tasmania, with more than 22,000 felt reports recorded, according to GeoScience Australia.

Thousands of residents took to social media within minutes saying that tall houses and apartments shook or swayed in the sky from the powerful quake.

“Was that an earthquake in Melbourne? I’m on the 70th floor of Eureka Tower and the whole building is swaying a few metres,” one resident said on Twitter.

“Did anyone in southeast Melbourne think they just felt a really big earthquake? Bloody hell, the whole house just shook!” Another local wrote.

“I felt my whole building shaking for about three minutes,” said a Toorak resident.

A second earthquake of magnitude 2.3 hit Croydon, east of Melbourne, on Tuesday, shortly after 5pm.

According to Earth Sciences, the earthquake struck at a depth of four kilometers and 277 felt news were recorded.

The small earthquake, which was recorded at 5.03pm, lasted only about 0.28 seconds.
