Presentiment? A giant paddlefish has been discovered in the waters off the northern coast of Taiwan and is seen as a symbol of impending disaster.

Divers have made a startling discovery in the waters off the northeastern coast of Taiwan: an enormous deep-sea paddlefish.

Video captured in late June shows the creature, which is over six feet long, with what appear to be giant bite marks.

Orfish are a deep-sea species that make their homes in the mesopelagic region at a depth of 200 to 1,000 meters below the surface of the ocean, so sightings of them are rare.

In Japanese folklore, the oar is known as “a messenger from the palace of the sea god” and has gained a reputation as a doomsday harbinger of sorts, according to National Geographic.

Local legend claims that oarfish appear before natural disasters such as tsunamis or earthquakes. In fact, six paddlefish were spotted days before a deadly 2017 earthquake hit the southern Philippines, according to a NatGeo report.

Experts say science says this myth is unbelievable.

“It is hard to imagine what kind of phenomenon before the earthquake would cause these paddlefish to leave [mesopelagic zone] Move towards the beach and mountain, Mark Penfield, an oceanographer and ecologist at Louisiana State University, told NatGeo.

Oarfish do not live near the ocean floor where deep-sea seismic activity occurs, and if this theory is correct, the oarfish wouldn’t be the only species seen before the earthquake.

According to the Catalina Island Marine Institute, paddlefish can grow to over 50 feet long, making them the longest bony fish in the world.

They are most likely responsible for sea serpent legends throughout history.
