Researchers have used data from NASA-ESA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory satellite to rebuild solar activity over the past twenty years. Increased solar activity is associated with solar explosions when large quantities of positively charged particles (protons) are emitted from the sun. By comparing SOHO data with the historical record of strong earthquakes, scientists observed more earthquakes as the number and velocities of incoming solar protons increased. Specifically, when protons peaked, there was a seismic rise above 5.6 degrees over the next 24 hours.

The Sun constantly releases massive amounts of energy and particles in the form of a solar wind. The most powerful explosions release electrically charged particles, such as ions and electrons. When they reach Earth, these charged particles can interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. New research suggests that particles produced by very strong explosions, specifically positively charged ions, may also affect the Earth’s crust rocks.

Increased tectonic deformation of the rocks can cause an electric current, as the electrically charged particles are “compressed” from the crystalline structure of the individual mineral grains. Based on this observation, the new study indicates that by reversing this process, charged particles coming from the sun may expand the mineral grains, which increases tectonic stress until the rocks are broken.

Other scientists remain cautious about these claims, criticizing how the data are chosen. The study looked only at earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.6. Earthquakes with magnitude greater than 5 occur in general every month, over 6 degrees every 4 to 6 months, and stronger earthquakes are rare. It may not take twenty years to obtain a reliable set of data. For example, the 2013 paper analyzing 100 years of sunspot and geomagnetic data found no evidence of a relationship between sun activity and Earth’s seismic activity.
