Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Japan will spend an additional $660 million to rebuild areas devastated by the devastating New Year's Day earthquake, bringing the total relief amount to $1.7 billion.

The 7.5-magnitude quake and its aftershocks devastated parts of the Ishikawa prefecture on the Sea of ​​Japan coast, toppling buildings, tearing up roads and sparking a major fire.

So far, 241 people have been confirmed dead due to the disaster, more than 10,000 people have taken refuge in shelters and hotels, and some parts of Ishikawa are still cut off from water.

This will mark the third allocation of emergency funds for recovery efforts from the New Year's Day earthquake, and the total is now expected to reach more than 260 billion yen ($1.7 billion).

Kishida said the latest money is designed in part to fund a support system that seeks to help young families and families raising children rebuild their destroyed homes.

The prime minister added that efforts to build temporary prefabricated housing will be accelerated, while pledging more support for Wajima's traditional handicraft industry known for its exquisite wares.

Damage from the quake that struck Ishikawa and two nearby areas is likely to cost between 1.1 trillion yen ($7.4 billion) and 2.6 trillion yen ($17.6 billion), according to government estimates as of last month.

But even the highest estimates are far short of the 16.9 trillion yen in damage caused by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

That disaster left about 18,500 dead or missing and caused the collapse of the Fukushima nuclear plant, the worst nuclear accident in the world since Chernobyl.
