Nurses intervene to protect newborns during the Taiwan earthquake

The strongest earthquake in 25 years shook Taiwan on April 3, 2024. As of Saturday, April 6, more than a thousand people were reported injured, 400 people remained trapped, and six people were still missing. Taiwan is still feeling the aftershocks resulting from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the second after the 1999 earthquake of 7.7 magnitude. The number of deaths reached 13.

In a courageous effort to protect the lives of Taiwan's youngest citizens, four nurses at Taipei's Ma Shiri Postnatal Center took action during the powerful earthquake rather than fleeing for their own safety. The Guardian newspaper published a video recording of their actions.

Gathering about 13 beds full of newborns in the middle of the nursery, the nurses devised a brave strategy to save the newborns from the immediate danger of the earthquake. They have combined the cots with wheels together in a set to reduce any disturbance felt by newborns. In the process, they pulled them away from the window, posing a crushing risk for all the newborns during the earthquake. To keep the newborns stable in this way, nurses held them until the earthquake passed.

All the nurses had the same mentality: protect the vulnerable.

“Of course we were afraid, very afraid, but I think this is the natural instinct of maternity staff,” Chen Ting Chen, supervisor of the Ma Shiri Maternity Centre, said in an interview with The Guardian. “The safety of children is of the utmost importance.”

Another nurse, Ali, expressed the same sentiment: “When the earthquake happened, we did not have time to be afraid. Our priority was to ensure the safety of the infants.”

The third nurse, Elaine, said: “Healthcare workers can relate. We hope our actions will inspire people to be kind. Please cherish those around you, life is precious.”

These nurses embody sacrificial love as they put the safety of their young patients above their own.
