Residents feel tremors when earthquake hits regional Queensland city

A 2.1 magnitude earthquake has rocked the regional city of Tully in Far North Queensland.

The tremors struck the city at around 8:02 pm on Tuesday, and its epicenter was about 8.7 kilometers from the city.

Tully is located about 140 km south of Cairns.

About 60 residents felt the effects of the earthquake, according to the Geoscience Australia website.

“Our dog ran out and acted scared, then later looked and felt like something hit the house and the ground shook,” one person wrote.

Another resident wrote on social media: “I heard a big bang and the house on McQuillen Street shook.”

Just two days ago, Tonga was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake that occurred about 70 kilometers from the popular island destination.

At the time, Tongan officials warned people not to head to higher ground as sirens sounded on the island.

On Monday, Sunrise host Nat Barr announced the breaking news.

She added: “The tremor was recorded at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time, and authorities believe that the strong tremors were likely felt near the epicenter.”

“So far there are no reports of damage or casualties.

“At this stage, the Bureau of Meteorology says there is no tsunami threat in Australia,” he added.
