Earthquakes in the East Tennessee Seismic Zone

The East Tennessee Seismic Zone extends through Tennessee and northwest Georgia to northeast Alabama. It is one of the most active earthquake zones in the Southeast. Although the area is not known to have experienced a major earthquake, some earthquakes in the area have caused minor damage. The largest known earthquake (magnitude 4.6) occurred on April 29, 2003, near Fort Payne, Alabama. Earthquakes that are too small to cause damage are felt about once a year. An eastern United States magnitude 5.5 earthquake can usually be felt 500 kilometers (300 mi) from where it strikes, and sometimes causes damage up to 40 kilometers (25 mi) away.

Faults

Everywhere earthquakes occur on faults within the rock, usually miles deep. Most of the bedrock in eastern Tennessee originated hundreds of millions of years ago, when the Appalachian Mountains formed.

At well-studied plate boundaries such as the San Andreas Fault system in California, scientists are often able to pinpoint the name of the specific fault responsible for the earthquake. In contrast, this rarely occurs east of the Rocky Mountains. The East Tennessee seismic zone is far from the nearest plate boundaries, which are located in the central Atlantic Ocean and in the Caribbean Sea.
