Earthquakes hit Sporting KC on home ground

The Earthquakes conceded two goals early in the second half on Saturday night to lose 2-1 at home to Sporting Kansas City.

Eric Toomey took advantage of assists from Nemanja Radoja and Johnny Russell to put Sporting Kansas City ahead three minutes into the second half. After Toomey took a right-footed shot from outside the box, he fired the ball into the left corner, evading San Jose goalkeeper William Yarbrough and into the net. Russell, who came on as a substitute early in the half, had his fourth assist of the season on Toomey's fifth goal.

Alan Pulido scored the second goal in the 57th minute, after he cut the ball down the right wing and Radoja passed it inside the Quakes' defensive area. Radoja recorded his fourth assist for Pulido's fourth goal of the season.

Sporting Kansas City defender Kerry Shelton scored an own goal in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1. Jack Skahan sent a low cross to Amahl Pellegrino in front of goal but Shelton parried it into the net. San Jose had one last chance from a corner kick in stoppage time but Preston Good couldn't handle the rebound.

It was the 10th loss in the last 12 games for the Quakes (4-17-2, 14 points), who are last in the MLS standings by seven points. Sporting KC have won back-to-back league games for the first time this season. They beat FC Dallas last Saturday in the league and beat them again in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Yarbruff made no saves for the Earthquakes. Tim Melia also made one save for Sporting KC (6-13-5, 23 points), which swept the season series after beating San Jose 2-1 at home in March.

The visitors won for just the fifth time in a series that Sporting Kansas City leads 33-28-12. Both teams won 3-0 at home last season.

Sporting Kansas City has won four straight, drawn two and lost two of its last eight visits to Paypal Park after failing to win there from 2000 to 2016.

The Earthquakes will host the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday. Sporting KC heads north to face the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday.
