Central Maine Hit by 2.8-Magnitude Earthquake

AUGUSTA — A magnitude 2.8 earthquake struck central Maine Sunday afternoon and was felt as far as 60 miles away, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake was reported at 2:50 p.m. in Gardiner, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A mild tremor was felt in an area about 20 miles across central Maine, but about 500 people told the U.S. Geological Survey they felt the quake as far away as 60 miles away.

It was not clear Sunday whether the earthquake had caused any damage.

People rushed to Facebook, mostly out of confusion about what had happened and to confirm that what they felt was an earthquake.

West Gardiner Fire Chief Don Gross said several people called the dispatch center.

“We got a report of a lady on Hallowell Street who thought her generator had exploded, but that was unfounded,” Gross said. “We investigated and found out it was an earthquake, but we weren’t sure what it was for a while.”

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a U.S. government agency that researches earthquakes and other natural events, earthquakes occur when there are cracks in the bottom of rocks, usually miles below the surface.

Earthquakes are not common in Maine or the rest of the Northeast. The last major earthquake felt by Maine residents was a 4.8 magnitude quake that struck New Jersey in April.

The unofficial Pittston City Facebook page posted that people felt the quake in Augusta, East Pittston and Whitefield, while others wrote that they didn't feel or hear anything except maybe the ground humming.

“I felt a really big thud – I thought a big truck had flipped over and hit something,” wrote Diane Weeks Kidder, who said she felt the quake from Route 126 in Pittston.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
