Earthquake near Sesimbra unrelated to August 26 quake

An earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale was recorded at 02:26 today with its epicenter about 30 kilometers from Sesimbra, in the Setúbal district, in a submerged area, without causing any human or material damage. Earlier, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported a 3.1 magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake was felt at low intensity, possibly with a maximum level of 3 (Modified Mercalli Scale) in the municipalities of Setúbal, Sines, Sesimbra, and other locations in the Lisbon area.

The Portuguese Meteorological Service confirmed that this event is part of the “normal activity of the area and does not indicate an increase in seismic activity in Portugal.”

“It should be noted that it is not possible to establish a connection between this earthquake and the earthquake that occurred on August 26,” the statement said.

On August 26, an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 on the Richter scale was recorded at 05:11, 58 kilometres west of Sines (also in the Setúbal area), causing no injuries or material damage, with aftershocks occurring afterwards.

According to the Meteorological and Marine Monitoring Authority, the earthquake did not cause any human or material damage, and was felt with a maximum strength of IV/V (modified Mercalli scale) in the Sines area and with a lower strength in the Setubal and Lisbon areas.
