Vanuatu Earthquake Response – Save the Children Australia

The Vanuatu government has confirmed that at least 10 people were killed and hundreds more injured, after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu, 37 kilometers from the capital, Port Vila, after midday on Tuesday, December 17, followed by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale. At approximately 05:00 on Wednesday 18 December. With communications lines still down, the full extent of the devastation remains unclear, but the quakes have damaged major infrastructure and buildings in Port Vila, including schools and hospitals, and rescue operations are currently underway for people trapped under rubble and collapsed buildings.

Initial estimates from the Vanuatu government indicate that up to 80,000 people reside in the affected population areas. Early data suggests that nearly 23,000 vulnerable individuals are in urgent need of assistance, highlighting the immediate risks to children, who are always the most vulnerable in times of disaster.

Vanuatu's interim Prime Minister, Charlotte Salwai, declared a state of emergency on Tuesday evening and called for international assistance.

Vanuatu is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, with its communities still recovering from a number of devastating tropical cyclones in recent years, including the twin Category 4 tropical cyclones Jodie and Kevin that struck in March 2023, which directly affected more than 80% of the country's population of about 320 thousand people.
