How did the Nuto Peninsula in Japan turn around the landscape

The terrain is usually formed gradually over long periods of time, but sometimes one event can significantly change things. On New Year's Day in 2024, a devastating earthquake in the Nuto Peninsula raised the area.

A group of researchers sought to study how this earthquake played – and perhaps others like it in the past – a role in forming the terrain of Nuto Peninsula.

They found evidence that the main geomorphic properties of the Nuto Peninsula (such as the sharp slopes in the northern and gentle slopes in the south) can be explained by the repeated events of earthquakes of the same type that occurred on January 1. The search may also be useful to understand the effect of future earthquakes.

A team of researchers from the University of Totoko, the University of Tokyo Metropolitan, the University of Iwita and the German Geographic Research Center conducted a multidisciplinary study that included experts in geodesia, seismology and geomorphology. Their paper is published in the magazine of Science Advances.

The results showed more than 4 meters of height and new terraces along the northern coast of the similarity, the western movement of the north of North Noto, and the slope of the slope in the mountainous areas. Some aspects can only be captured by satellite radar analyzes, such as extensive declines (a type of landslide) that extend several kilometers.

“To support satellite images analyzes, we had a geographic team in geomorphology conducting field work and measuring the amount of lifting personally,” explains.

This allowed the team to compare their notes on Earth with satellite photo analyzes. The distribution of height was agreed with the results of the analyzes, which supports its accuracy. Then this information was used by the Geodes and Seismology Team to estimate the rift sliding model designed to explain the rising and Western displacement patterns.

The match between the landscape features on the peninsula and the deformation associated with the earthquake indicates that the repetition of large earthquakes of the same type that can be explained by the Nuto 2024 Earthquakes in the landscape. Details discovered from this study provide completely new visions that exactly we know how earthquakes can significantly change the land on which we stand.
