“We have always asked the authorities to move us to safer locations.”

On Friday morning, as her house started wobbling, the first thing that struck Junmaya Tamang’s mind was an earthquake. Then there was the uncharacteristic deafening sound of an earthquake, before her house began to shake violently. She was on the balcony to retrieve the corn kernels she had left to dry and when she heard the noise, her instinct told her to flee. But before she could move, a large block of mud and stones rushed down the hill. I came out cold with a stone.

“I don’t remember what happened next,” said Tamang, 34. “When I opened my eyes, my husband was pulling me out of the rubble.”

She was taken with three other survivors to the Chautara District Hospital.

Eleven people were killed and 27 are still missing after a landslide hit the village of Golchi Lady in the rural municipality of Gogal-2 in Sindhupalchuk Friday morning. The landslide buried 13 houses. Five people were seriously injured. Tamang was one of them.

Friday’s landslide was a tragedy that had been in the making for months, according to another survivor, Ash Bahadur-dong.

“There have been alarming signs for weeks, as small landslides have been erupting over the village,” said Gurung. The government did not express any concern even after we informed the authorities. “

The villagers submitted a memo to the district disaster management committee to seek help on August 7, but it went unheeded.

As the monsoons continued, the Tarai region was hit by floods and landslides in the hilly areas.

According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, landslides have killed nearly 200 people in mountainous regions across the country since mid-April. Seven were killed in the floods in the plains of Tarai.

Sunmaya Tamang, who survived the landslide on Friday, said that if local authorities had heeded the villagers’ request, the villagers would have been alive.

“The local authorities asked the villagers to move to a safe place, but they did not arrange any alternative location,” Sunmaya said. “Where can the villagers go?”

Lidi Gaun is a remote village two days’ walk from Chautara, the district headquarters. The village received electricity and the road network only last year.

Pratap Lama, the head of Section 2 of Gogal Rural Municipality, said his office has sought help from the provincial and federal government.

“The last tragedy is particularly unfortunate as there were early indications of last week’s story,” Lama told the newspaper. “The area where Lady is located is already weakened by earthquakes in 2015. Geologists have long been warning of the dangers of landslides.”

37 families were displaced in Lidi by a landslide on Friday.

Hom Narayan Shrestha, the mayor of Gogal Rural Municipality, said that while all were damaged, 13 were completely destroyed. Shrestha said the displaced are now being moved to temporary shelters.

Sindhubalchuk Province has been hit by a series of natural disasters over the past decade. Geologists said the 2015 earthquake, which killed 3,570 and destroyed more than 90,000 homes, made the region’s terrain particularly vulnerable to landslides.

Multiple landslides in the past three years have displaced nearly 700 families in the area. The Bhotikoshi flood in 2016 and floods and landslides this year have caused many deaths, injuries and displacement in the area.

As of late Friday afternoon, survivors of the landslide in Lidi had not received much help from the authorities.

District President Umesh Kumar Dakal said relief efforts are continuing.

“Forty tarpaulins, utensils, blankets and mattresses were transported to the village by helicopter,” Dacall said.

In the aftermath of the accident, a team led by House Speaker Agni Sapkota visited the survivors. He was accompanied by local government officials, a wing chief and local leaders.

Sunmaya expressed regret that the government does not pay attention to people living in disaster-prone areas until after people die and their homes are wiped out.

“A timely intervention could have prevented the tragedy that occurred today,” said Senmaya. “If the villagers had been moved to a safer place, no injuries would have occurred.”
