The Italian restaurant on St Asaph has reopened after the Canterbury earthquake.

The famous Christchurch restaurant, Cafe Valentino, changes after 29 years because its longtime owner “couldn’t afford to keep it.”

Michael Turner said the impact of the Covid-19 shutdown and rising wage costs prompted him to sell the restaurant to a group linked to Aikmans Bar and Eatery in Merivale.

Valentino Cafe opened on Colombo Street in 1991 and led it through the Canterbury earthquakes, which destroyed its building and prompted the move to St Asaph St.

He said it was difficult to pay suppliers during the lockdown when he had no income.

Life became very difficult. It was an incredibly stressful time. It was a step too far.

“I couldn’t afford to keep her. If I went through two bad months, this is the end of my life, so she needs someone who has pockets deeper than me.”

“Wages have tripled, but the price of the product we sell hasn’t even doubled,” Turner said since its opening.

He wants to take a break and then opens a small pizzeria called Paparazzi Wood Fire.

Most of his employees will be retained by the new owners.

Leaving the Valentino Café behind was “heartbreaking” many years later, and he said there would be tears after he handed the keys to the new owners on Monday.
