On August 31, 2025, an earthquake 6.0 struck East Afghanistan. At least 2,205 people were confirmed, with more than half of women and girls, and 3640 other people were injured. Nearly half a million people are in urgent need of help, including an estimated 119,760 women of childbearing age, including 11670 currently pregnant women. Tens of thousands of families are now living in temporary shelters in two locations in the Nurgal area with limited access to sewage, food, hygiene and shelter supplies.

UNFPA focuses on restoring hope, health and dignity for women and girls affected by the earthquake by providing health information and services for integrated mothers and reproductive, mental health, psychological and social support, and the prevention of sex -based violence. By working through mobile health teams, providing female services to females and community networks, the response to earthquakes will include providing basic emergency medical supplies, dignity tools and monthly cleaning groups.

UNFPA urgently seeks to obtain $ 5 million to support life rescue services to 140,000 people in the areas affected by the earthquake between September and 2025.
