Schools, companies, families, and individuals in the Ashburton region will be encouraged to participate in national earthquake exercises next week.

People are encouraged to drop, cover and hold everyone at the same time at 9:30 am on Thursday, October 16 as part of Shakeout 2025.

Drop and Cover and Hold technology prevents you from being falling, making you a smaller target for flying and falling things, protecting your head, neck and vital organs.

You can prepare in advance by selecting a safe place, such as the bottom of a powerful table or next to an internal wall, to take shelter from the earthquake.

The Civil Defense Observer and the director of the group for compliance and development, Ian Hyde, said that the earthquakes were among the five largest emergency risks to the region.
