San Jose Earthquakes win season finale but fail to reach playoffs

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes finished their 2025 regular season with a thrilling 2-1 win at PayPal Park on Saturday night, but the win wasn't enough to secure a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Fans arrived with high hopes and plenty of excitement, knowing that a postseason berth was still within reach.

They were rewarded with a thrilling ending. After trailing 1-0, San Jose scored two late goals to seal the win over Austin FC.

“Once the other team scored, it was a little scary,” Vallejo's Katrina Evans said. “But honestly, the audience was there and we kept each other's minds together and then we exchanged conversations and the excitement rose.”

Not only did the Earthquakes need a win, they also needed help from other results around the league. Three more games had to swing in San Jose's favor for them to qualify.

Those hopes were dashed in the final minutes of the match between Real Salt Lake and St. Louis, which decided the team's fate.

“They battled, they didn't have anything going their way and then this came, that's all you can ask for,” San Jose's Nick Lazar said. “So it's just relief and excitement and joy.”

The Quakes haven't made the playoffs since 2010, and fans like Union City's Keith Doser say the drought has tested their loyalty.

“I come here every year and hope for the best,” Doser said. “I can't beat them all. Especially with 30 teams in the league now, it will be more difficult, but I will stay here every year until the end.”

The 2025 season has seen a major turnaround for the Earthquakes, who finished last in MLS in 2024.

This was the first season under coach Bruce Arena, one of the most accomplished managers in American soccer history.

“After last year and to come back and perform like this, it's amazing,” San Jose's Lars Stokeby said. “I started watching them in 1979, so I've been through them all and it's good to see them again, Bruce is doing a great job.”

Despite their playoff dreams being cut short, fans praised the team's renewed energy under Arena.
