The death toll from the Afghanistan earthquake has risen to 20 dead and hundreds injured

Electricity supply lines were cut from neighboring Uzbekistan and Tajikistan

At least 20 people were killed and hundreds more injured after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan around 1 a.m. local time on Monday (2030 GMT Sunday), officials said.

Dr. Sharafat Zaman, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said that 20 people had been confirmed dead, with most of the victims reported in the northern provinces of Samangan and Balkh.

The earthquake caused “huge human losses and huge financial losses,” according to the Afghan Red Crescent Society.

Search and rescue operations continue to search for survivors.

The city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, also reported casualties and property damage.

Damage was also reported in the northwestern province of Baghlan, according to officials.

About 800 houses were partially destroyed in Chojani village of Shahr Bozurg District of Badakhshan Province.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers (17.4 miles) near Mazar-i-Sharif, one of the largest cities in the country.

The authorities ordered all hospitals to be fully prepared to provide health services to earthquake victims.

Cutting power lines in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan

The strong earthquake also affected electricity supply lines from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, leading to the disruption of services to several areas.

The national electricity company Da Afghanistan Prishna (DABS) said that the lines extending from Nayabad to Samangan and from Kholm to Pul Khumri have been cut.

“As a result of this outage, the provinces of Kabul, Baghlan, Parwan, Panjshir, Kapisa, Logar, Paktia, Ghazni and Maidan Wardak were completely deprived of imported energy supplied via this route,” Tolo News reported.

Technical teams are “working to evaluate the lines and restore electricity,” DABS said.

The Ministry of Defense said it was clearing roads that were closed due to landslides caused by the earthquake.

Afghanistan has been rocked by at least eight major earthquakes, including the latest one, since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

In August this year, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook the eastern province of Kunar, killing more than 2,200 people and leveling hundreds of homes and buildings.
