Earthquakes star Espinoza becomes free agent after option expires: Sources

San Jose Earthquakes star Christian Espinoza will be out of contract this winter and enter free agency after not picking up his 2026 contract option before the deadline expired, sources familiar with the situation told The Athletic.

The sources added that Espinoza prefers to stay in the MLS, and San Jose has offered him a new contract, but he is also open to options abroad. He will be one of the top free agents on the MLB market this winter, if not the top option.

Espinoza, 30, is the team's all-time leader with 83 assists. He joined San Jose in 2019 and has quietly been one of the most consistent and productive forwards in the league.

This year, Espinoza scored four goals and had 12 assists, helping keep San Jose in the playoff race until the final day of the season. He has had at least eight assists in every season (including the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign) and has missed just nine of a possible 227 regular-season games.

Despite his individual excellence, San Jose only made the first round of the playoffs once during his seven seasons with the club. The Quakes have never hosted a playoff game nor advanced.

Espinoza has been a designated player on his last contract, and should be in high demand in the league this season.

Before joining San Jose, Espinosa played for Villarreal, but did not feature in any matches for the club after joining from Argentinian club Huracán. He spent time on loan with Alaves, Real Valladolid and Boca Juniors before signing for the Quakes.
