AC/DC's first Australian showing in 10 years was so powerful it set off seismic detectors

AC/DC's first concert in Australia in a decade was so powerful, it had earthquake detection equipment turned on.

Wednesday (November 12) saw AC/DC kick off their first hometown tour in 10 years, performing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. The show – which had been a long time coming to fans – proved to be a thunderous one in more ways than one, with reports now claiming the concert was so large, seismic vibrations were recorded on seismic equipment.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Adam Pascal, chief scientist at the Center for Earthquake Research, said vibrations in the 2 to 5 Hz range were recorded at their office in Richmond, about three and a half kilometers from the concert venue.

Pascal explained that although the loud music from the show was a big factor in the recorded vibrations, it wasn't the only thing that contributed to the recordings.

“The sound waves that people were sensing nearby and feeling something through their bodies, that's equivalent to what our seismographs sense. We're picking up the motion of the ground, we're not picking up sound from the air.”

He continued: “So you have speakers on the ground pumping out the vibrations and it's transmitted through the ground, but also the crowd jumping up and down feeds the energy into the ground.”

“If everyone is jumping in unison, that tends to amplify the signal so we can pick it up a little better,” Pascal said. “Whereas if it was just general crowd movement, as is the case even in the Grand Final at the MCG, we can still pick that up.”

One resident living 10km from the ABC said the show was so loud they were able to hear the concert, while two others from Hawthorn – a suburb far from the MCG – said they were able to hear the show too.

AC/DC's return to Australia for the first time in a decade sees the release of all their hits including 'Back In Black', 'Thunderstruck', 'Shoot To Thrill' and more, plus the return of 'Jailbreak' for the first time in 34 years.

The “PWR UP” tour takes its name from AC/DC's 2020 album of the same name (“Power Up”), their 17th studio record.
