At least 10 people were killed and over a hundred injured when a massive 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Dhaka and parts of the country on Friday (November 21, 2025), damaging buildings, causing fires in several places and spreading panic among residents.

Officials said four of the victims died in the capital, Dhaka, five in Narsingdi, the epicenter of the quake, and one in the coastal river town of Narayanganj.

Media reports indicated that in the industrial city located on the outskirts of the capital, Ghazipur alone, at least 100 workers in various units were injured while trying to exit buildings during the earthquake.

The Meteorological Office said the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 10:38 am (local time), was located about 10 kilometers below the surface of the earth in Narsingdi, which is located about 13 kilometers east of the epicenter in Dhaka's Agargaon area.

At least three people died after a fence, bamboo scaffolding and debris from a five-storey building fell on them in the Armanitola area of Old Dhaka, Dhaka Deputy Police Commissioner Malik Ahsanuddin Sami said, citing the fire service.

Mr. Sami confirmed that one of the deceased was a medical student who was there to buy meat with his mother. He added that she was seriously injured and required emergency surgery.

One of the dead was an eight-year-old boy, while media citing family members said his wounded father was later pronounced dead by doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Reports said that among the dead in Dhaka was a 50-year-old private security guard who died after part of a building wall collapsed on him during the earthquake.

The Narsindi district administration said in a statement that five people were killed and at least four, including a boy and his father, were seriously injured.

On the outskirts of Narayanganj, a girl died and her mother was seriously injured when a wall collapsed on her.

In Sutrapur's Swamibag area, also located in Old Dhaka, an eight-storey building reportedly leaned on another building in the aftermath of the quake, while in Kalabagan area, a seven-storey building appeared to be leaning, although fire officials reported that it remained structurally sound.

A fire broke out in a house in Dhaka's upscale Baridhara area shortly after the quake, but firefighters could not immediately confirm whether it was related to the quake.

Another fire was reported in a residential building from Gazaria area on the outskirts of Munshiganj, while the fire service immediately responded to extinguish the fire.

Reports of minor cracks appearing in some buildings also came from several areas in the capital and its surrounding areas, including Narsingdi.

Reports indicated that the earthquake also damaged buildings and caused fires in the suburbs of Munshiganj, northwest Rajshahi and southeast Chattogram.

Experts have long said the risk of major earthquakes is high in Bangladesh because of its location on the border of active tectonic plates, with many saying a major quake is inevitable, even though it could happen decades away.

Meteorological department officials said an earthquake of this strength near Dhaka had never happened before and it was feared that if it lasted for just 5 to 7 seconds, the death toll and building collapse could rise significantly.

Earthquake expert Professor Mehdi Ahmed Ansari of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) said a 6-magnitude tremor could lead to the collapse of most structures in the country.

“This earthquake (on Friday) is a wake-up call for Bangladesh,” Mr. Ansari said.
