The “Drop and Dive” earthquake alarm turned out to be a false alarm US News
An alarm went off on phones in the US on Thursday, preparing people to “drop, hunker down and wait” – but it turned out to be completely false.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) warned of a 5.9 magnitude earthquake near Dayton, Nevada, and residents of the San Francisco area, about 180 miles away, also got the message.
However, several law enforcement agencies near the epicenter of the reported earthquake reported no shaking or other signs of earthquake.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake can typically cause minor property damage and visible shaking, according to magnitude scales.
The reason for the false alarm is unclear, but it is believed to be the first time the automated system has sent a false message.
“To my knowledge, we have never encountered a false alarm like this,” said Yaarub Al-Taweel of the National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado.
“The system provided incorrect information about exaggerated magnitude or depth, which was immediately corrected by the seismologist on duty, [but] “I've seen it happen before,” Al-Tawil said.
Angie Lux of the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory said she had never heard of a completely false alarm.
She said the cause could be “noise stimuli” from man-made sources, such as explosions or construction work, or even from large vehicles.
Natural phenomena of such stimuli include wind and ocean waves.

The UK experienced its (genuine) earthquake this week when a 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck northwest England.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the quake was felt across the southern Lake District and Lancashire, particularly within 20 kilometers of the epicenter, including Kendal and Ulverston in neighboring Cumbria.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
