The presentation will begin with a brief description of the Spitak earthquake of December 7, 1988, which stimulated the idea of ​​founding the American University of Armenia. As one of the founders of the AUA, Der Kyorijian tells the story of how the university was established during the most difficult time in Armenia's modern history, and how it developed and advanced over the subsequent three decades. The book also lists AUA's affiliation with the University of California and its being the first university outside the United States accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Armen Der Kyuregian is President Emeritus of the American University of Armenia and Taissy Professor of Civil Engineering Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. His teaching and research are concerned with the reliability of constructed facilities, stochastic structural dynamics, and earthquake engineering. Among other awards, he received the Walter L. Hooper Civil Engineering Research Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Alfred M. Freudenthal Medal, and the Thomas A. Middlebrooks, George Winter Medal. For his efforts in advancing education in Armenia, he was awarded the Movses Khorenatsi Medal by the Government of Armenia and the Saint Sahak-Saint Mesrop Medal by His Holiness Garegin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. Der Kyuregian is a foreign-elected member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, and an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering.
