US Vice President JD Vance said Britain’s constant change of prime ministers showed the country’s political system was failing to meet public expectations and warned British voters were “desperate” for structural change.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Mr Vance said Britain’s problems were not about any one individual but reflected a deep-rooted disorder in the entire political system.
He cited the example of changing British prime ministers several times, including David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.
“I’ve seen six prime ministers in Britain in a few years, which tells me that there is something very unstable in British politics and that people are yearning for really significant structural changes,” Vance said.
According to him, Britain “has long been disappointed by its leaders” and “could have done much more than it is currently doing”.
Last month, Keir Starmer announced he would step down as prime minister and leader of the Labor Party after less than two years in power, following a rebellion within the party.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who won the Makerfield by-election, is seen as a strong contender to replace Starmer.

Mr. Vance said he did not know much about Mr. Burnham personally, but confirmed that the United States would cooperate with whoever leads “one of America’s closest and most important allies.”
The US vice president’s statements were released on the 250th anniversary of the US declaration of independence from Britain, amid months of relentless US criticism of the UK.
Recently, US President Donald Trump said Starmer had “failed catastrophically” on immigration and energy issues.
Earlier this year, Trump also said Starmer was “not Winston Churchill” after relations between the two sides deteriorated due to Britain’s hesitance to support the war between the United States, Israel and Iran.
Mr Vance also spoke out harshly following the stabbing death of British teenager Henry Nowak last month. He argued that this event would not have happened if European elites had “resolutely opposed the policies of self-denial and mass immigration.”
In response, the British Prime Minister’s Office accused these foreign politicians of attempting to “interfere” with British democracy and “incite division.”
The US vice-president rejected the idea that his criticism showed hostility towards Britain.
He stressed: “They come from love and admiration… even if what we say is sometimes provocative.”
Mr. Vance expressed similar views at the Munich Security Conference last year, accusing European governments of “opening the doors” to immigrants, restricting free speech and undermining democratic norms.
