Marshall Stanton, a member of the local Rotary Club International, first heard about the ShelterBox while attending the Rotary Conference in 2004 in Osaka, Japan.

“I saw a demonstration of this and it caught my attention,” Stanton said.

The box consists of survival equipment, such as hand tools, cooking supplies, a water filtration system, mosquito net, a stove, and a tent for ten.

“I must have spent some time (on the show) leaving my name and phone number,” Stanton said.

He said that when he got back, he started getting calls from someone in Chicago about the box.

“He called me two or three times before saying yes, and I’m glad I did,” said Stanton. “It was a great experience.”

Since saying yes, Stanton has been across the state and elsewhere with ShelterBox to increase support to buy more. Each box costs $ 1,000 and is stored, ready to go where you need it.

Global network

According to Stanton, there are six hubs around the world where boxes are kept in reserve. The hubs are strategically placed so that the funds are of maximum use.

“It’s predicted where these things are going to happen,” Stanton said.

He said there are places like the Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and tsunamis happen often, areas of the Middle East often torn apart by war, and Africa that experiences civil wars, droughts and famines.

“There are more people who have lost their homes now who are refugees than at any time in the world,” Stanton said.

According to Stanton, 85 million people have been displaced by disasters, the same as the total population of nearly 15 states in the western United States.

Stanton said assisting Rotary members who have contacts and connections with government officials and the ShelterBox network allows the boxes to be deployed, typically in less than 48 hours, anywhere around the world.

A good example of how the funds could be used was the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

“Haiti has been the biggest disaster in the hemisphere in recent years,” Stanton said. “ShelterBox had 30,000 of those boxes out there.”

While funds are sent around the world, the organization sometimes helps people in the United States as well.

“These were sent to the Gulf Coast for Katrina,” Stanton said. “They were (also) used on the East Coast when (Hurricane Sandy) swept across New Jersey.”

While the same boxes were being used in New Jersey, he said, the organization sent in so many blankets that the storm hit late in the year.

Awarded for his efforts

For his volunteer work in 2019 with ShelterBox, Stanton was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

According to ShelterBox, Stanton’s work has helped the organization in its efforts to provide shelter and life-saving supplies to more than 145,000 people in 11 countries.
