Millions hit by week-long earthquake warning
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook eastern Japan on Wednesday morning, prompting authorities to warn millions of the possibility of aftershocks of similar strength within the next week.
The epicenter of the quake was in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, striking at 10:06 a.m. local time at a depth of about 30 miles. The tremors were strongest in Ibaraki and Tochigi, where ground movement reached levels capable of unbalancing people. Surrounding prefectures — including Fukushima, Chiba and Saitama — reported weaker tremors. The shaking did not generate a tsunami.
Rail operators temporarily suspended high-speed train services between Sendai and Tokyo to conduct mandatory inspections, causing major travel delays, The Independent reported. The nuclear facilities were examined and found to be operating normally.
Meteorologists said communities should be prepared for additional tremors that could be as strong as the initial tremor, and urged residents to remain alert as the region enters a period of high seismic instability.
“In areas experiencing strong tremors, be alert for earthquakes with a maximum seismic magnitude of about 5 or less about a week after the earthquake,” a press release from the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Newsweek has reached out to the Japan Meteorological Agency via email for comment.
What is the aftershock of an earthquake?
Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that follow a primary seismic event in which underground stress is redistributed along a fault line. It can occur minutes, hours, or even days after the initial rupture. In some cases, aftershocks approach the strength of the first quake, which is why officials have warned that additional tremors — potentially severe enough to disrupt daily routines — remain possible for up to a week. Japan’s geological location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates interact, makes these sequences particularly common.
What kind of damage can a 5.0 magnitude earthquake cause?
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake is considered moderate, but its real-world impact depends on how strongly the shaking is felt on the surface. In Japan, this quake registered a “low 5” on the country’s earthquake intensity scale, enough to cause items to fall, create difficulty standing, and slightly strain old buildings. Thanks to Japan’s strict seismic engineering standards and extensive preparedness, early assessments found no major casualties or structural collapses, although transportation networks have seen disruptions due to safety checks.
What to do during an earthquake?
During an earthquake, safety depends on quick and consistent action. Emergency officials recommend the “drop, cover and wait” method: drop to the ground to avoid a crash, take cover under sturdy furniture or near an interior wall, and hold still until the shaking stops.
People indoors should stay away from windows, shelves, and heavy objects that might fall, while people outside should stay away from buildings, power lines, and anything that might collapse. If you are in a moving vehicle, stop safely and stay inside until the shaking stops. These steps help reduce injuries during sudden or intense ground movements and are widely promoted throughout Japan due to frequent seismic activity in the country.
