A magnitude 6 earthquake struck about seven miles south of Honaunau in the South Kona region of Hawaii Island, with residents reporting strong shaking across the state.

A magnitude 6 earthquake was recorded in Hawaii.

The quake occurred seven miles south of Honaunau in the South Kona area of ​​Hawaii Island, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake did not cause a tsunami. The quake occurred at 9:46 p.m. local time, and was centered about 3.7 miles east-southeast of the Honaunau-Napopu region along the west side of Mauna Loa, at a depth of 14 miles.

The US Geological Survey said the state’s volcano observatory was assessing Kilauea volcano following the quake. Kilauea Volcano, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, is located on the Big Island of Hawaii.

In an update earlier Friday, the USGS’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) said the next eruption would occur sometime between May 24 and 27, citing forecast models.

The quake was followed by a second earthquake just six minutes later, recording a magnitude of 3.2, to the northwest of the first, about 13 miles below the surface.
