Did you hear that? Here’s what we know about the big buzz heard about MAS.
Local News “The Bolide meteor made a loud bang.”
Was it thunder? earthquake? meteor? Sonic boom?
People across Greater Boston and beyond heard and felt a loud bang Saturday afternoon, as reported across various social media platforms and neighborhood groups.
“Did anyone hear the loud explosion around 2:10pm in the Oak Square area?” Boston City Council President Liz Brydon posted in the Allston-Brighton Facebook group.
Some social media users speculated it was an explosion, earthquake or sonic boom.
Meteorologists quickly ruled out an earthquake and suggested that the incident was probably a meteorite. Here’s what local officials and meteorologists say:
“A very large flash detected by the GOES-19 GLM is not associated with active thunderstorms,” spaceflight meteorologist Nick Stewart reported.
The flash intensity product really shows that anomalous “flash” which is so characteristic of a meteor/meteorite return. East Boston. This is the likely source of the loud bang/bang. pic.twitter.com/ka5b9KfiQ7

“The Bolide meteor made a loud sonic boom,” Pete Bouchard, NBC10 Boston’s chief meteorologist, said on Channel X.
The flying meteorite made a loud sonic boom. You can see it on the GLM satellite. The blobs off the beach are lightning, but the big bang off the south shore is a shooting star. pic.twitter.com/a2AF7x34TA

“There is no lightning in this current storm, and there is no USGS earthquake,” NBC10 Boston meteorologist Pamela Gardner said.

I think this NOAA product that measures some sort of energy definitely shows the explosion in the atmosphere over Cape Cod Bay. This is what we all heard. Just a little bigger than the tree I thought it fell. #Boom pic.twitter.com/Gz0aPFEI4N

Theory about the ‘bloom’: The GOES19 lightning chart shows a large flash far from the actual lightning, near SE Mass. meteor? pic.twitter.com/ejzCC2ca3K

All – Numerous reports of a “big boom” with shaking felt at ground level across the inland mass from about Franklin Massachusetts northward into north central RI. The US Geological Survey “did not” report an earthquake. This “may” be a meteorite that exploded in the air with a streak of light observed in social media…

This afternoon, Massachusetts Public Safety officials received reports of audible booms and earthquakes in eastern Massachusetts. Although we don’t know the cause yet, there are no known emergency police or fire calls associated with these reports and we don’t believe…
– Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) May 30, 2026
“There have been hundreds of emergency calls across eastern MA, southern NH. and northern CT,” Northeast Massachusetts Emergency Alerts posted on Facebook at 2:31 p.m., confirming a loud sound was heard in the Peabody/Middleton/Linfield area.
“There is no confirmation of what this may have been, but there was no evidence of any type of fire or explosion when companies responded to investigate in several towns,” the post noted. “It’s possible there was an earthquake or some type of sonic boom. A similar incident occurred over the past few days in South Carolina. There have been no reports of any ongoing danger to the public.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
