Defense ministers, military chiefs, diplomats and analysts gathered this weekend in Singapore for the annual meeting Shangri-La Dialoguewhere regional security challenges will be discussed and a series of bilateral meetings organized.

Hegseth is expected to address regional and global concerns, including US engagement in the Asia-Pacific – particularly with regard to South China Sea And Taiwan – as well as the rivalry with AI and The United States’ war against Iranwhich has plunged the world into the most serious energy crisis in decades.

Officials from countries including Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, New Zealand and Australia are expected at the event.

Chinese Minister of Defense Dong Jun skipped the forum – which Beijing considers a US-led event – ​​for the second year in a row.

Beijing has in recent years strengthened its defense and security ties with its neighbors, particularly with Southeast Asian countries.

This year’s three-day event will be the 23rd edition of the Shangri-La Dialogue.
