PTI ‘seriously considering’ leaving system due to ‘denial’ of political space, warns Asad Qaiser

Asad Qaiser, senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former speaker of the National Assembly, has warned that his party is “seriously considering” leaving the system, while stressing the need for a new Charter of Democracy in the country.

Qaiser’s comments came hours after he claimed that restrictions on his movement had prevented him from reaching Islamabad airport on time, causing him to miss a flight to Skardu, where he was to participate in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) election campaign.

Speaking on Geo News’ ‘Naya Pakistan’, the PTI leader said police detained him for 40 minutes and released him only after the flight left.

“Who will accept such elections? It is better to make a selection than to hold such polls,” Qaiser said, referring to the British elections scheduled for June 7.

Responding to a question on holding talks with the government, PTI leader Qaiser said, “We have adopted a principled policy and believe that there must be a Charter of Democracy in the country.

“By Charter of Democracy, we mean that new, free and fair elections must take place. Furthermore, all political parties must have confidence in an electoral commission capable of conducting free and fair polls. Only then can the country move forward.”

However, the former NA president said PTI also had other options if the party founded by Imran Khan did not have a political space in the country.

“If this does not happen, we will go out of the system. We are working to ensure our legal rights and our mandate must be respected. If our mandate is not respected, we can take any decision,” he warned.

When asked if the former ruling party was considering mass resignations from the legislature as well as dissolution of the PTI-dominated KP Assembly, Qaiser said:

“There are different ways to leave the system, but no final decision has been made so far. However, we are seriously considering not being left with any options. [but to exit the system] if the system continues to operate in the same way.

Speaking on the same programme, Minister of State for Home Talal Chaudhry said “high alert” was in place in the twin cities due to the presence of the Australian cricket team in Rawalpindi.

Dismissing PTI’s claims that a level playing field was being denied, the state minister said the government did not want questions to be raised about the electoral process in Britain.

Responding to a question on Qaiser’s arrest, Talal said: “Whatever happened was due to security concerns. If the intention had been to arrest Qaiser, there were many other ways to do it.”
