Death toll from US strikes on suspected drug boats passes 200 with latest attack

The U.S. military said it carried out another strike Friday against a boat accused of drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing three men in the third attack this week and bringing the total death toll to more than 200 people.

US Southern Command – which manages US military operations in the Latin America region south of Mexico and the Caribbean – announced the latest strike in the months-long campaign against suspected drug boats passing through the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific, with its usual language that the vessel was “engaged in drug trafficking operations” and operated by a designated terrorist organization. He provided no evidence.

Although military announcements on social media always include video of the attacks, this appears to be the first to feature color images rather than black and white. The video shows a small ship floating in the ocean before being hit and engulfed by a fireball. We see what could be the boat in flames, surrounded by a large plume of packages or other objects scattered around it in the water.

This attack brings the death toll to at least 202 compared to the series of American strikes which began in early September, with two other attacks announced Tuesday and Wednesday. The Trump administration has declared the United States to be in armed conflict with Latin American drug cartels, saying the latter are behind the flow of drugs into American communities.

The death toll also rose slightly this week as some people initially reported by the U.S. military as survivors of the strikes were not found.

The legality of boat strikes has been examined by experts. The White House later confirmed a Washington Post report that in the first attack, which occurred on September 2, the United States conducted a follow-up strike, or what is known as a double tap, that killed two survivors of the initial strike on the ship.

Some lawmakers questioned whether this subsequent strike constituted a war crime.
