Update: Reports of an explosion around the Boston area were likely caused by a large meteorite entering the atmosphere. The GOES-19 satellite detected a large flash that did not appear to be related to thunderstorm activity.

Several Boston residents reported hearing a massive explosion on Saturday. While authorities have yet to issue a statement on what exactly happened, many social media users have speculated whether there was an earthquake in Massachusetts.

“Reports of a ‘big explosion’ were felt in several towns in the Boston area as well as in Rhode Island. Buildings were felt, but the USGS did not record an earthquake. Police are unsure what just happened. No fire or visible smoke has been confirmed yet,” one local resident wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Another person added: “Just felt one of these north of Boston. Huge bang. 2:11pm. Weird.”

“Hearing reports of an explosion all around Boston, I think it will be a fairly large meteor/meteorite entering the atmosphere. Very large ‘flare’ detected by GOES-19 GLM not associated with active thunderstorms. #MAwx,” a third person tweeted.

Earthquake in Union County

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey reported two earthquakes in Union County, South Carolina, on Friday evening. It is 240 miles away from Boston. So the two events are not related. The US Geological Survey said a 1.8-magnitude earthquake occurred around 6:05 p.m. local time on Friday.

Another earthquake was recorded at approximately 6:22 p.m.

Similar booms were heard elsewhere

On Saturday, a similar explosion-like sound and possible boom were heard in Rhode Island as well. Many local residents reported the sound on social media. However, just like Boston, there is no confirmed activity.

On Thursday, residents across central South Carolina were stunned after a powerful boom shook homes and buildings throughout the Midlands. The unexplained sound was reported at approximately 5:30 p.m., with witnesses saying they heard and felt the impact from multiple locations spanning the state. Reports came from areas including Columbia, Lexington, Sumter, Camden, Blythewood, North Augusta, and Darlington County, indicating that the event was felt over a remarkably large area.

Many residents took to social media shortly after the incident, trying to determine whether the noise was caused by an earthquake, explosion or other unusual event.

Others reported that the force of the boom shook homes and startled pets.

“A massive boom was just heard throughout the Midlands of South Carolina. Homes shook downtown and a shock wave hit Irmo, South Carolina at approximately 5:24 PM EST,” one social media account posted.

Another resident shared footage from a home security camera and wrote: “Heard a loud bang all over the Midlands of South Carolina! You can hear the loud bang from my Nest cam! Crazy! Normally you can’t hear this kind of stuff. Crazy that this wasn’t an earthquake.”

On Facebook, eyewitnesses described similar experiences.

One person commented, saying: “Yes… I heard a very strong explosion while standing in the city center. My wife heard and felt it near the airport.”

Another added: “I heard and felt it in West Columbia behind Lakemead. Felt like something hit the building.”

A third resident wrote: “Yes, I heard that. It shook my house and disturbed my three dogs; barking like crazy!”
