Geologist Brian Atwater leads a field trip to Willapa Bay to examine evidence of earthquakes

Participants included state and county emergency managers, forest ecologists, members of the Northwest Scientific Society and a Chinook tribal leader. In the 1980s and 1990s, Atwater was among the geological investigators who identified the Cascadia subduction zone as the source of major earthquakes, as large as magnitude 8 to 9. Among his co-workers was tree-ring scientist David Yamaguchi ’86, who chronicled the death of western red cedar trees killed by recent earthquakes in southwestern Washington estuaries. This dating identified the Cascadia earthquake in 1700 as the cause of the Pacific tsunami that caused flooding and damage in the Pacific Northwest and Japan.

Atwater led a field trip to Pacific County in March, where participants took a boat trip to examine signs of past seismic activity by analyzing the soil layer.
