National Guard and U.S. Army help fight California fires

The National Guard and the US Army have sent aid to the site of massive fires in northern California that have torched hundreds of homes and prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.

The help comes amid a staff shortage on the fire lines, prompting officials to make painful decisions about which areas to save and which to leave to burn.

Jeremy Rahn, media officer for LNU Lightning Complex, said the Guard is providing helicopter support along with dozens of 20-person crews to fire across the state, and the military has sent several specially equipped C-130s to serve as air carriers. A fire in Northern California.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Saturday that the White House has approved California’s request for a presidential declaration of major disaster to bolster the state’s emergency response to the wildfires raging in northern California.

The second and third largest wildfires in California history are expected to grow in the next few days as a new system of thunderstorms moves over the state, producing dry lightning and gale winds.

The National Weather Service issued red flag warnings across vast swaths of northern and central California that went into effect at 5 a.m. Sunday.
