Here’s how Brewers outfielder Jackson Chorio feels about playing for his home country in the World Baseball Classic.

Milwaukee area residents showed up big time to support the United for Venezuela emergency relief effort launched in partnership with Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras and outfielder Jackson Chorio.

Now, 27 tons of donations have arrived in Miami, where Forward Latino’s humanitarian partner, Global Empowerment Mission, will ship them to communities devastated by the earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June.

It’s just the first semi-trailer filled with donations from Wisconsin, containing non-perishable food, bottled water, sleeping bags, blankets and other emergency supplies.

The response has been so overwhelming that the organization is now seeking financial donations to cover transportation costs, said Darrell Morin, president of Forward Latino.

“This shipment represents the extraordinary compassion of people who have refused to stand idly by while families in Venezuela face unimaginable tragedy,” Morin said in a press release. “We are so grateful to every volunteer, donor, partner and supporter who made this possible.”

The donation campaign was launched on June 29. Forward Latino partnered with the Brewers’ Contreras, Chourio and coach Nestor Corredor, all Venezuelans, as well as Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish to launch the fundraiser.

Morin previously said that more than two tons of those donations were collected in just the first three hours of the flight.

“It was not easy for us, Venezuelans. Thank you for the support,” Contreras said in Spanish during the tournament’s kick-off ceremony. He added, “It is difficult to play this way, knowing that we care and wish to be in Venezuela at this moment to help those who need it. But in this other way, we have to help Venezuela.”

Forward Latino accepts tax-deductible cash donations on its website, forwardlatino.org.

“The generosity of our communities has exceeded all expectations,” Morin said. “Now we need help to ensure these life-saving supplies reach the families who need them most.”
