Simulation videos show what the tsunami will do to the Washington coast

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources has released a series of videos showing the estimated height and speed of waves that will hit the coast.

Olympia, Washington – 320 years have passed since the last major earthquake to hit the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants to help communities along the Washington coast prepare for the next step.

On January 26, 1700, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck the fault, causing the coastline to drop by several feet and causing tsunamis that smashed into the ground, leaving sandy sediments and submerging forests.

Geological evidence shows that these large earthquakes occur roughly every 250 years, which means they can occur at any time.

DNR wants Washington residents to be able to visualize what another tsunami could do to the state.

The department released a series of tsunami simulation videos showing the estimated height and velocity of the waves that would hit Washington’s southwest coast after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Geologists at DNR, home of the Washington Geological Survey, have produced simulations using detailed tsunami models.

“Tsunami waves struck the Washington coast several times during our geological history,” Public Land Commissioner Hillary Franz said. “It’s a matter of when, not whether, the next video will happen … These videos are designed to give the communities that will be most affected by the tsunami waves an insight into which areas are likely to face the most damage so that they can make sure their residents, businesses and organizations are safe and resilient. “.

The videos show simulations of the Cascadia tsunami of the southwest coast of Washington, with detailed local effects displayed for Port Grace and the Long Beach Peninsula, where damage from the tsunami in the 1700s can still be seen.

DNR says this simulation is designed to give emergency planners and communities the best possible visual information about the effects and timing of the tsunami so they can plan accordingly.
