Jeff Bridges and Isabel Bridges-Bush “Daughter’s Day”

In addition to being a legendary actor, devoted activist, competent musician, and cultural icon of California, Jeff Bridges is a great father. So much so, that his eldest daughter, Isabel Bridges-Bush, wrote a children’s book on the topic called Daddy Daughter Day, in which her father contributed illustrations and handwriting.

Growing up in Los Angeles until the Northridge earthquake struck their home with “revenge” – “we never slept there again,” she explains – Bridges-Bush moved to Santa Barbara with her family at the age of 13, where she attended Crane School and then Bishop Diego High School. Today, she lives in Auckland with her husband and two children, and works as a facilitator who focuses on empowering mothers. She still visits Santa Barbara monthly, or at least that was the usual pace in pre-pandemic times.

The release of their book this week coincides with – and somewhat coincidentally – with Father-Daughter’s Day on October 11th. Bridges-Boesch told me more about the project and her life recently.

How was Jeff Bridges as a father?

It is a difficult question to answer. It’s like asking a fish, “How’s the water you’re swimming in?” He is the only father I have had, so naturally I have a famous father. And I know this isn’t normal, so both things are true.

There are a lot of perks. We traveled to visit him in movie sets, meet interesting people, and go to interesting places. But my parents also chose to protect us from this world, from Hollywood, so I wasn’t exposed as much as I think some of the other kids celebs have had.

Was he a good father?

He was a really great friend. When he was at home, he was at home. He will play with us. He was going to enter the world of creativity we had and go there with us. I think this is also unique. Many parents are unable to.

The start of motherhood was really bumpy. I suffered from severe depression after giving birth. I felt isolated and alone. So the job I do is support other moms who might feel this way. Although the groups I facilitate are also for mothers seeking a local or virtual community. We have a real talk. We are talking about successes and lows in both motherhood but also outside motherhood, so we can find fulfillment as human beings, not just as mothers.

How did this book come about?

It’s funny, because the book came about the same way it does the book. You came to my dad and I said, “Hey Dad, I have this great idea – let’s write a book together called Daddy-Daughter Day.” It was fertile soil for him, because he recently spoke to Mike Richardson, owner of Dark Horse Publishing, who thought it’d be cool if they wrote a book together.

So my dad was on the plane, and the story was actually written. Together, we deconstructed the story so we can fit into this book’s dialogue format.

Apparently yes. When I look at these pictures, I go back to my childhood, because these are the drawings that I grew up doing alongside my parents.

I wanted the book to look like the books that he and my children would like to create.

We used to scroll a magazine back and forth. He would write one page and then write one page. It will start and finish a drawing, or vice versa. This is how we decided to print in his handwriting instead of writing.

Did the story take place in real life?

All the things Bill and her father did in the book, Dad and I did. The biggest difference is that I grew up with younger sisters, and Belle grew up with a younger brother. This is a depiction of my children, because I have a girl and I have a son. It is not always easy to share a parent.

I know this applies to myself. When my father came home after being away for three months, I didn’t want to share it with my sisters. But this also applies to my daughter. When her dad comes home from work all day, she doesn’t want to share it with her brother. This is something special that all children can relate to.

Brother is given a rather short vacation.

You feel bad for him, especially when you see his little green face. We can empathize with each of the characters, including the mother. Mons often brings it all together.

Was Father-Daughter’s Day Close Long Time?

This is a good question. We didn’t know there was a father-daughter birthday. I thought I kind of invented it. There is a holiday for everything these days, and this happens to be on October 11th, a few days after our book came out. That was a coincidence. See IsabelleBridges.com and DaddyDaughterDay.com.
