South Florida Task Force 2 returns from hurricane-ravaged Louisiana – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather, sports

MIAMI (WSVN) – After a long drive from Louisiana, the South Florida Task Force 2 is back home with stories that tell of the widespread devastation that Hurricane Laura and Delta wrought in the area.

7News’ cameras captured the moment a motorcade of rescue vehicles entered a Miami firehouse on Saturday.

“Good to come back!” Said one of the firefighters from the task force.

When asked what he was looking forward to now that he got home, Task Force member Vincent Latona replied, “Go home with the family, and see my wife.”

For the past 10 days, these first responders in South Florida have been wading through the flood waters of Lake Charles, the city hard hit by tropical weather this year.

Six weeks ago, Hurricane Laura destroyed homes in the area. Two weeks ago, a hurricane in Delta struck the city again.

45 members of Task Force 2, along with search and rescue boats and tall water trucks, came to help.

“It was a good opportunity to get out there and provide assistance wherever we could,” said Task Force Leader Scott Dean.

Those surrounded by floods have been evacuated to higher ground, and health checks have been conducted to ensure homeowners in the area are well.

For this team, made up mostly of Miami city firefighters, it has been a busy year.

In January, they traveled to Puerto Rico to help after the earthquake.

Right before being sent to Lake Charles, they were in Tallahassee after severe weather struck the Panhandle.

Now that they are home, all of their equipment has been washed well.

“There are more storms out there, and we want to make sure that when we leave today, the equipment is ready to go out the door tomorrow if we need to,” Dean said.

These city heroes are always ready to hit the road for help when needed, but for now, they’re happy to take a break in South Florida.

Family members are usually willing to welcome Task Force 2 members into the home, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, this tradition is currently on hold.
