The state is restoring the earthquake-damaged Soldotna Bridge

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Utilities (DOT & PF) is repairing a portion of the bridge on Stirling Express in Soldotna that was damaged by the November 2018 earthquake.

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Anchorage on the morning of November 30, 2018, caused significant damage to infrastructure throughout the central region of the state.

According to DOT & PF, over 265 sites have been assessed after the earthquake and it has been determined that more than 150 of them are in need of permanent repairs. The goal of the repairs is to restore damaged infrastructure to “serviceable life before an earthquake,” according to DOT & PF’s 2018 Earthquake Recovery website.

A subset of these repairs are bridges, which DOT & PF began repairing in the fall of 2020.

Shannon McCarthy, Director of Communications for the Department of Transportation and Director of Administrative Operations, said via email that repairs are being made to bridges in and around Anchorage, Matt Sue and Kenai.

McCarthy said the earthquake caused shifts and cracks under the bridge in Soldotna, but the damage was minimal because the bridge was too far from the epicenter. For this reason, the contractor is expected to work on the bridge for only two days.

Permanent repair work is expected to continue through 2022, according to DOT & PF. McCarthy said the Department of Transportation has spent about $ 30 million on construction so far and forecasts about $ 70 million in future construction costs.
