The UN Secretary-General makes priority recommendations to speed up TB responses and achieve goals

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres released a new report today entitled Progress towards the global tuberculosis targets and implementation of the political declaration of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the fight against tuberculosis. The report emphasizes that high-level commitments and targets have spurred global and national progress in stopping TB, but urgent and more ambitious investments and actions are needed, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report was developed with the support of the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) as requested in the 2018 UN High-Level Political Declaration on TB.

The Secretary-General’s report, based on data submitted by some 200 countries to the WHO World Program on TB, provides an overview of progress towards the global TB targets and on the implementation of the Declaration. Despite recent advances in reducing incidence and deaths and in closing gaps in access to prevention and care, the report highlights that gains are sensitive. TB remains the world’s largest infectious killer.

Member States are called upon to implement 10 priority recommendations to put the world on track to achieve the agreed targets by 2022 and beyond, and to reduce the huge human and social tax caused by TB.

“This is a ‘game-changing year’ in which countries are halfway through their efforts to achieve the goals of the UN political declaration thanks to national and political action. However, these gains are in jeopardy, especially due to the COVID-19 crisis. said Dr. Tereza Kasaeva, Director of the WHO Global Program for TB. “We must urgently take bold action that will dramatically transform the response to TB. who suffer and die from TB. All lives matter! “

The recommendations set out in the report discussed the official side event of the UN General Assembly: “Progress and multisectoral action in achieving global goals to stop TB”, jointly by the World Health Organization and the Russian Federation on 23 September. Held on the sidelines of the 75th UN General Assembly, the event brought together a distinguished lineup of speakers that included WHO and UN leadership, health ministers, partners and civil society.
