MHP urges preparation for a possible earthquake in Istanbul

The leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) said that Turkey should increase its level of earthquake preparedness, especially for Istanbul, where experts warn of a possible major earthquake, and suggested that the government establish a specific scientific council consisting of seismologists and academics to do the necessary work.

“Preparations must be made, and precautions should be considered immediately for a possible earthquake in Istanbul on the basis of all kinds of scenarios,” Dolt Bahceli, Chairman of the MHP, told his parliamentary group in a weekly speech on October 3.

The deadly earthquake that struck Izmir last week and killed more than 100 people raised the alarm once again of a major earthquake that could occur in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city. An earthquake struck the Marmara region in 1999 when it killed around 17,000 people.

Bahceli said that dozens of Turkish citizens were killed as a result of the Izmir earthquake, and he criticized contractors for collapsed buildings and those who provided the necessary permits for them.

Noting that Turkey stands on active fault lines and that earthquakes are unfortunately part of the fate of these lands, Bahçeli said, “It is necessary for us to live with the reality of the earthquake and develop planning for the future accordingly.”

Bahceli stressed the need for the urgent completion of earthquake planning for each district and urban transformation projects through the discovery of vulnerable buildings. He suggested setting up a Seismological Board to handle all these preparations.
