The death toll from the earthquake rises to 116 in Turkey; Rescuers end searches – World News

The death toll from last week’s Aegean earthquake rose to 116 on Wednesday as rescuers in the Turkish city of Izmir completed their search of buildings that collapsed in the earthquake.

All but two of the victims were killed in Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city. Two teenagers were killed on the Greek island of Samos, which lies south of the epicenter of Friday’s earthquake. The US Geological Survey put the quake’s strength at 7.0, although other agencies recorded it as less severe.

Mehmet Guloglu, head of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, said that search and rescue operations have been completed in 17 buildings that fell in Izmir. The rescue operation has started in full force since Friday, pulling 107 survivors from the rubble.

The agency added that of the 1,035 people injured in the earthquake, 137 remained in hospital on Wednesday.

After a cabinet meeting, Tuesday evening, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged not to surrender until the last person was recovered. Rescuers were spirited Tuesday when they pulled a 3-year-old girl out of the rubble of her family’s home 91 hours after the earthquake.

The earthquake was felt in parts of western Turkey, including Istanbul, as well as in the Greek capital, Athens. About 1,700 aftershocks followed, 45 of which were greater than 4.0 degrees.

In Izmir, the earthquake reduced buildings to rubble or smashed floors on themselves. Authorities detained nine people, including contractors, for questioning about six of the buildings collapsing.

Turkey has a mixture of old buildings and new buildings made of cheap or illegal construction that does not tolerate earthquakes well. Regulations have been tightened to reinforce or demolish old buildings, and urban renewal is underway in Turkish cities, but experts say this is not happening fast enough.
