Readers have written this letter before, but the statement is worth repeating. Humboldt State University emeritus professor of geology Laurie Dingler and her weekly lessons on earthquakes and tsunamis are a global feature of our county. Her “Not My Fault” series deserves to be featured in the Sunday New York Times, but for now we can include her exclusive Times-Standard show in her list of reasons why living in Humboldt is great. Natural disasters in all their forms affect every square inch of our planet, and education is the basic building block for improving outcomes for humans and our built environment. The links that Professor Dengler draws in her essays between distant tectonic events and our vulnerable region is a unique resident trait, a feature we enjoy the luxury of taking for granted, but we shouldn’t. I have lived in societies that lacked adequate education regarding natural disasters, and I saw the tragic outcome of the weak response to the earthquake in Yushu, China, in 2010, where even basic lessons about what to do when the quake began could have saved hundreds of lives. I’ve taught high school locally since 2011, and although earthquake drills evoke the occasional groan of teens, they understand the value of this tradition of preparedness in our county, especially when viewing statistics on recent earthquakes and tsunamis around the world. Professor Dingler has done much more to develop this tradition of preparedness in our region than anyone else, and although we deserve a heartfelt “thanks”, the best way to show our gratitude to Professor Dingler is to do our part in educating ourselves, our loved ones and our youth about the strength of our planet’s natural forces, and strength. That we have inside ourselves to prepare for these events.
