6000 homeowners in Christchurch apply for the EQC program for sale

Nearly 6,000 homeowners have applied to the Earthquake Commission (EQC) for funding to repair lost earthquake damage.

Last year, the government announced a $ 300 million package to address “sales” – properties purchased after the Canterbury earthquake by unsuspecting owners who later discovered undiscovered damage from the earthquake.

In October, EQC told the Herald that it had received nearly six times the orders it had initially expected, but that it still believed it had enough money.

Today, the organization confirmed that it has written to all applicants with documentation to prove their eligibility, such as sale and purchase agreements and construction reports prior to purchase.

“Once their eligibility is reviewed, every eligible home owner will be matched with a settlement specialist to take them through the appraisal and settlement process,” said Pep Andrews, Head of Sales on Sale at EQC.

EQC sent out a mailing in August to more than 44,000 homes in Canterbury purchased since 2011, as well as ads on radio and newspapers, resulting in more than 3,000 applications being placed in the last month.

Andrews said that the majority of applicants will be notified of their eligibility before the end of January 2021, if they provide their information in 2020.

“This will start a lot of work in the residential building industry in Canterbury early next year. Together with qualified and licensed building practitioners, the homeowners will oversee their repair process.”

One homeowner who applied for the fund said in September that discovering his family’s “worthless” main assets was too painful, and he hoped the program would help his family move forward.
