The death toll from the earthquake reached 73 as Indonesia grappled with a series of disasters

JAKARTA (Reuters) – At least 73 people have died after an earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Sulawesi province on Friday, the disaster reduction agency said on Sunday, the latest in a series of disasters to hit the Southeast Asian country.

BNBB spokesman Raditya Gati said more than 820 people were injured and more than 27,800 left their homes after the magnitude 6.2 earthquake. Witnesses said that some took refuge in the mountains, while others went to cramped evacuation centers.

Gati added that police and army officers have been deployed to quell the looting in several parts of the region.

He said that an emergency response situation, aimed at assisting in the rescue efforts, has been in place for two weeks.

Dwikorita Karnawati, head of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), said another earthquake in the region could trigger a tsunami.

On both sides of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, earthquakes are regularly hit in Indonesia. In 2018, a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit Palu, Sulawesi, killing thousands.

Just two weeks into the new year, the world’s fourth most populous country is grappling with several disasters.

Authorities say floods in North Sulawesi and South Kalimantan have killed at least five this month, while landslides in West Java province have killed at least 29 people.

On January 9, a Sriwijaya Aviation company crashed in the Java Sea with 62 people on board.

The Mount Semero volcano in East Java erupted late Saturday evening, but there were no reports of injuries or evacuations.

Dwikorita said severe weather and other “multiple hazards” of hydrometeorology are expected in the coming weeks.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
