After a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier at Goshimath in Uttarkhand near the Rishi Ganga Power Project broke down resulting in massive flooding in the Dauli Ganga River, the state government issued written numbers for assistance to people stranded in those affected areas.

It can also occur after a massive displacement of water in a glacier lake when a large portion of an adjacent glacier collapses into it.

Direct causes of glacial lake eruptions are earthquakes, heavy rains / thaws, long-term dam deterioration, etc.

Many fear missing

Officials said more than 150 people have died and more than 150 are missing after the massive floods near the power project.

Trivendra Singh Rawat said that 600 Indian Army and ITBP are on standby to deal with any emerging situation and all rescue teams are doing their best to save the lives of missing workers of NTPC (140 count) and RishiGanga (17 numbers).

CM Rawat said that medical teams have been relocated to the affected site and a 30-bed hospital in Joshimath is equipped to handle the emergency.

“Hospitals in Srinagar, Rishikesh, Golegrant and Dehradun are on alert. We are doing our best to deal with this disaster,” CM said.

A glacier collapsed in Goshimath in Chamuli district on Sunday, causing widespread damage to the upper reaches of the ecologically fragile Himalayas and the nearby Rishiganga power plant. Houses along the road were washed away as water gushed down the hillsides in a raging torrent. There were concerns of damage to human settlements downstream. Many villages were evacuated and people moved to safer areas.

According to a statement from the Shamuli Police, the Rishiganga Power Project was damaged after a glacier broke through in the Tabuvan region.
