Tremor felt: Residents react to a magnitude 2.5 earthquake in Yarmouth County

Residents of southwestern Nova Scotia were shocked Wednesday afternoon after a 2.5-magnitude earthquake struck Yarmouth County and shook some buildings.

“I heard the sound of thunder,” said Sarah Allen, who was teaching a virtual class at NSCC Yarmouth at about 1:45 pm EST.

“I felt the ground shaking under my feet and stopped … [and] When I looked out the window, one of my students said, “Did you feel that too?”

The Canadian Seismological Company confirmed that the quake struck 32 kilometers west of Yarmouth at 1:48 pm Wednesday

Allen said she heard two loud noises, which she initially thought were due to nearby construction.

However, some students who live outside Yarmouth have also heard strange sounds.

Previous earthquakes in the region

This is not the first time that a small earthquake has hit the region.

A 3.1-magnitude earthquake shook parts of western Nova Scotia in September 2018. Before that, in 2016, people felt a 3.0-magnitude earthquake in Yarmouth.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a rumor. It’s happened in the past,” said Pam Mood, Mayor of Yarmouth.
