2 small Valentine’s Day earthquakes shake Malibu

Malibu, California – Was it alien Earth’s way of saying “I love you” on Valentine’s Day? Two minor earthquakes outside of Malibu were reported within 30 minutes of each other on Sunday afternoon, according to the California Institute of Technology and the US Geological Survey’s Southern California Earthquake Data Center.

First, a 2.2-magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:46 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Winding Road, near Point Dome, according to points of longitude and latitude provided by the commission. It hit 8.71 feet underground.

At 2:15 p.m., an earthquake measuring 1.8 on the Richter scale was reported in roughly the same area, hitting 11.42 miles underground.

According to Michigan Tech seismologists, earthquakes below 2.5 are usually too slight to be felt, and cause no damage. Malibuet is probably paying more attention to the 30 mph winds flowing throughout Southern California.

900,000 earthquakes are recorded under 2.5 every year. Lucy Jones, a retired seismologist at the US Geological Survey, said 3.0 earthquakes occur every week in California, but California residents still have to prepare for “big earthquakes” because they will happen sooner or later.

“I’m not trying to get scared. I’m trying to inspire work that will prevent our scenarios from being realized,” she said in a keynote speech to international scientists in Japan on May 21, 2017.

In June 2019, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck about half a mile off the coast of Point Mojo. It was hit deep underground so it didn’t cause much damage, but it remained tangible around Malibu, Ventura County, and San Fernando Valley. In May 2017, a 3.3 earthquake struck off the coast and was widely felt. Some of the most notorious earthquakes in Malibu include 5.9 in 1973, 5.2 in 1979, 5.0 in 1989, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which caused damage in the city.
