Nissan Motor Co. said it will suspend production at two domestic manufacturers for two days this week due to a lack of spare parts in the wake of the strong earthquake that struck northeastern Japan earlier this month, according to local reports.

The automaker planned to halt production at its factories in Oppama and Shonan, which is operated by subsidiary Nissan Chattai, on Monday (Feb.22) and Tuesday, after major suppliers reported damage to the plant from the magnitude 7.3 earthquake. The components affected were not disclosed.

Obama has an annual capacity of 240,000 cars a year, and it manufactures Nissan Note, Sylvie, and Liv EV passenger cars, while Shonan manufactures mainly commercial vehicles.

This came on the heels of the three-day closure last week by Toyota Motor of nine of its domestic factories due to earthquake damage to a number of its component suppliers.

The earthquake was described locally as a follow-up to a devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake 10 years ago, which caused a massive tsunami that devastated large coastal areas in northeastern Japan, killing more than 20,000 people.

The halt came as global automakers, including Toyota and Nissan, were grappling with a global semiconductor shortage after global chip makers last year increased production allocations to other industries – particularly consumer electronics.
