Washington residents will soon be able to receive an alert on their phones if an earthquake occurs near their location.

A statement from the Washington Department of Emergency Management on Monday said the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System will begin operating in Washington state on May 4.

The ShakeAlert system, operated by the US Geological Survey and Seismic Network in the Pacific Northwest, works by sending residents an instant alert on their cell phones, giving them seconds of warning before the vibration from the earthquake reaches them.

However, experts said it is not a tool for predicting earthquakes. Instead, the system quickly detects and provides information about earthquakes that have already started and includes an estimate of the earthquake’s magnitude, location, and the vibration it might produce.

“Nothing can replace families who have a contingency plan in place and ready for at least two weeks,” Gov. Jay Inslee said in a pre-prepared statement. “We all know that an earthquake can strike at any time. An earthquake early warning system can provide the critical time that Washington residents need to drop, cover, and hang on. It has the power to save lives and reduce damage to critical infrastructure.”

Although the system will be operational on May 4, there is still work to be done. The USGS and its partners, including the University of Washington, will add more seismometers to the network through 2025. The agency said the sensor network is only 65% complete in Washington state, so more work is needed to further strengthen the ShakeAlert system. . The ability to improve the speed of delivery of alerts.

Experts said on or before May 4, residents will want to check their phones to make sure wireless emergency alerts are turned on to allow ShakeAlert alerts to arrive.

No system tests are expected on May 4. Officials said they are still checking the results of a wireless emergency alert test taken in February.
