ShakeAlert: Washington Earthquake Early Warning System to go into operation May 4

The ShakeAlert system quickly detects earthquakes that have already started and then sends alerts to people’s cell phones to warn them before the shaking occurs.

A statement from the Washington Department of Emergency Management on Monday said the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System will begin operating in Washington state on May 4.

The ShakeAlert system, operated by the US Geological Survey and Seismic Network in the Pacific Northwest, works by sending residents an instant alert on their cell phones, giving them seconds of warning before the vibration from the earthquake reaches them.

However, experts said it is not a tool for predicting earthquakes. Instead, the system quickly detects and provides information about earthquakes that have already started and includes an estimate of the earthquake’s magnitude, location, and the vibration it might produce.

“Nothing can replace families who have a contingency plan in place and ready for at least two weeks,” Gov. Jay Inslee said in a pre-prepared statement. “We all know that an earthquake can strike at any time. An earthquake early warning system can provide the critical time that Washington residents need to drop, cover, and hang on. Although the system will be operational on May 4, there is still work to be done.
